100 gecs became known for their upbeat, hyper-eccentric and postmodern music during the COVID-19 lockdown era. But since 2023, the duo hasn’t released any new music and has had little to no activity on social media. In this article, we’ll go through the duo’s early history and try to answer the question: what happened to 100 gecs?
Who are 100 gecs?
100 gecs consists of Laura Les and Dylan Brady and was formed in 2015. The two members, who both originate from the state of Missouri, released their first EP the following year, 2016. Les, who at the time studied audio engineering in Chicago, also released music as a solo artist by the name of osno1. On the side of studying and producing, or maybe the other way around, Les worked full time at a restaurant in Chicago.
Brady also released solo music, though under his own name. In 2017 and 2018, he also worked on projects for The Neighbourhood, G-Eazy and Role Model.
The 100 gecs breakthrough
The big 100 gecs breakthrough came when the duo released the album “1000 gecs” in 2019. The album quickly received a positive review from The Needle Drop and an even better review from Pitchfork just some time later. The chaotic sound started circulating heavily online and built the duo a steady following.
The success brought new opportunities. Dylan went on to work with Charli XCX and produced several songs on her 2020 album “how i’m feeling now”. Les quit her restaurant job, moved to Los Angeles and later released “Haunted,” her first major solo single under the name Laura Les.
The 2020 record deal with Atlantic Records
In 2020, 100 gecs signed a multi-record deal with Atlantic Records. The financial instability, which earlier was a constant worry for the two artists, became less of a concern. The deal did, however, bring new anxieties. Signing to a major label came with a new level of expectations. In an interview with The Fader, Les and Brady explain how the making of the most recent album “10,000 gecs” included scrapping thousands of demos. When asked about whether the amount of pressure made music-making less fun, Les answered “100%”.
Internal pressure
The pressure didn’t only stem from the major label though, it came mostly from within. During the process of creating 10,000 gecs, Les talks about being in her own head and not being satisfied with anything. According to Brady, the pressure came mostly from not wanting to create anything that sounded like the earlier album.
Following the release of 10,000 gecs
After missing several deadlines, the duo finally dropped 10,000 gecs in the spring of 2023. The album received strong reviews including 4 out of 5 from The Guardian, 8/10 from The Needle Drop and an 8.4/10 from Pitchfork. They embarked on a headlining tour across North America and announced an extensive tour in Europe in the fall of 2023.
In July of 2023, the duo released a statement stating that they had to cancel the European tour. “We’re sorry to cancel our upcoming shows, but we’re physically and mentally worn out” the statement read. The tour was planned to include 14 shows in seven different countries. At the end of the statement, the duo stated “we’ll be back soon”.
But apart from three shows and a merch drop in 2025, the duo has not really been back since.
So what happened to 100 gecs?
Following the enormous success of 100 gecs which led to a major-label deal and extensive touring, the duo felt the pressure was getting to them. It resulted in a long and exhausting creation of the album 10,000 gecs which included narrowing down thousands of demos to just ten songs. After touring across the U.S. and Canada, the duo decided to cancel the European tour supposed to take place later the same year due to physical and mental exhaustion. This was followed by a long period with no new releases and very little activity on social media.
Since the last release in 2023, Brady has released several solo songs, including collaborations with Skrillex, Josh Pan and also produced for major artists such as Selena Gomez, Joji and FKA Twigs. Laura Les has stepped back from social media, with a contributing factor believed to be intrusive and obsessive ”fans”, although this has not yet been confirmed. She recently released music under the alias AOI-1.
The duo still work on music together
In an interview with Pitchfork in early 2026, Brady confirms that he and Les have worked on new music together. When asked about whether he wanted to focus on his solo career or 100 gecs, Brady said “I’m definitely gonna be geccing forever”. He states that he and Laura are in the early stages of making new music and that they’re “having a good time”.
